A Few Simple Rules

Over the last couple of days I have set myself up some guidelines on how I want to be eating and working out. Normally I don’t like to plan anything but when it comes to weight loss and exercise if I don’t have it planned there is no way I will stick to any semblance of a routine. I know that as time goes on and a healthier lifestyle becomes second nature to me, I won’t need as much of a black and white routine. Any structure right now helps keep me on the right path, and that is exactly what I need to loose weight and keep it off.

  • Eat a healthy breakfast 5 days a week – All to often I find myself wanting eggs, bacon and toast every morning. While this is fine occasionally it can be a heart stopper every day. I want to stick to healthy breakfasts during the weekday. Egg white omelettes, cereal and yogurt, oatmeal, toast and fruit and really just anything high fibre and filled with protein so it helps keep me full. Breakfast is all to important to me. If I don’t eat it the rest of the day is like walking on a tight rope, where I will fall into an endless pile of snacks.
  • Carry a water bottle – Keeping water on my person seems like a pretty simple task, and it usually is. I really want to emphasize how important water is to keeping my munchies away. If I’m not well hydrated I find I have limited self control about what I put in my mouth. Drinking enough water is important for getting my ass into the gym as well. I need to round up my good water bottles and keep them in easy reach.
  • No eating past 9:30 – Everyone knows that you shouldn’t eat really late into the night, but does anyone really follow the rule? I want to try and keep any late night snacking at bay by avoiding food after 9:30pm. That may seem a little late to some of you, but if I work until 8:00pm I like to be able to have dinner or a snack when I get home. I am going to try and stick to only tea or water after 9:30pm, and hopefully this helps keep the Cheetos out of my mouth.
  • Include more fruits and veggies – Another basic one! I always seem to neglect fresh fruit and vegetables, and I really don’t know why. I enjoy eating them. I want to try and include a serving of veggies with every meal. It can be as simple as a handful of spinach in a smoothie, or some roasted veggies with dinner. They just need to be there.  Fruit is going to become my snacking priority. I am hoping to be surprised by how much better I feel.

These few rules are pretty simple, and honestly I think they will help guide me into the direction I want to be. I am also going to keep a more consistent food journal, and may share what a typical day looks like for me, but for right now I just need to stay focused on being the best that I can be, as corny as that sounds. I will try and check in once a week and let you guys know how this whole system is going, and at the end of the month I should be a few pounds lighter.

Sunday Morning Easy

I woke up this morning needing something good for my body. I haven’t eaten horrible this weekend but I could certainly tell my body need vitamins, and super fast. I don’t have an actual food journal as of yet, hopefully I will be heading to Chapters to buy a pretty one soon, so for now  I will post some of my meals online.

This smoothie was delicious. Packed full of vitamins, sneaky vegetables and some fresh fruit to round everything out.

  • 1/2 cup wild blueberris
  • 1/4 cup cranberries
  • 1/4 cup raspberries
  • 1/3 cup greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1tbsp chia seeds
  • 2 cups spinach ( one giant handful)
I just threw everything into my ninja and blended away. I love the ninja because its smaller and more convenient than a blender but it packs the same powerful punch. I honestly think it would blend anything, and hasn’t let me down yet.
While reaching into my spinach bag I noticed that it was almost time to throw it away even though I still had a little over half of it to go. I am making turkey soup for dinner tonight and planned to incorporate some spinach into my bowl, but other than that I really had no immediate use for the rest of it. Enter Google.
I saw images of frozen spinach “cubes”. I wilted my spinach down in my pan, it honestly took like 3 minutes, blended it up and had it in ice cube trays. Now to wait for it to fully freeze, put it in a container and just pop the cubes into my smoothies or pasta sauces whenever needed. Ingenious.

Now to run off to the grocery store, head out for a walk, and get some studying done. Hope everyone has a Happy Sunday!

Weight Lost or Bust – Aug 2 Part 1

Good morning everyone!

Today is day one of rededicating myself to weight loss and getting healthy. Most important is keeping myself alive, keeping my heart strong and living a long and meaningful life. In order to do that I need to change. I’m excited to even feel excited about food again. I am at my happiest when I’m in the kitchen creating delicious meals, now my focus will be on wholesome food. I rely way to much on prepackaged crackers, bread and deli meats. This stuff is not good for me at all! I’m a white sugar addict and I love salty chips. I know how I should be eating but I tend to allow myself to overlook what’s healthy and give into cravings for carbs loaded with cheese, huge bowls of pasta and sugary drinks.

Every couple of days I’m going post some pictures of what I’m eating to help keep myself accountable. I’m in it to win it!

1 6 inch whole wheat wrap

So far I feel good. I’m not overly hungry. Adding a decent amount of protein in the morning really helps keep me fueled for the day. I’ll be back with lunch!

It’s Back…

…Monday that is! This weekend flew by. Between visiting with friends, cleaning the house and grocery shopping my weekend zipped by. I need a pause button for weekends.

Every Monday needs to start with a vitamin packed smoothie. If your anything like me you probably finished off the wine bottle, neglected your 7 am run and ate a few slices of pizza to many. Enter the smoothie.

I know everyone has a smoothie recipe they love, and honestly my berry combination stays pretty much the same. I love blueberries! Add some Greek yogurt, chia seeds and a splash of almond milk and your set. Nothing is more refreshing on a Monday morning.

This smoothie is pretty simple.

I use my food processor. I find it chops through frozen fruit a little bit better then my dying blender.

Add:
1 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 cup strawberries
4 oz Greek yogurt
2 tbsp chia seeds
Splash of almond milk ( depending on how thick you like it)

Pulse everything together and you have a vitamin punch to start your day. I like my smoothies a little bit thicker so I don’t often add much liquid. I think I love smoothies because you can mix them up so much. Add a banana, some strawberries and orange juice and you would have such a delicious treat.

What did you get up to this weekend?

Project Tasteless- Bangover Breakfast

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the last Project Tasteless challenge.  I am seriously saddened by this.  At the same time we are making bangover breakfast.  In order to make a bangover breakfast you must have gotten stuffed the previous night.  Nothing says love like all night sex and delicious homemade breakfast in the morning. With the abundance of cheese, bacon and potatoes left over from last night I figured I would make a frittata.  Crumble some bacon, cut some potatoes and look like Martha fucking Stewart.  It only seems appropriate that your date should know something about you other than the way you like to get it in.

“Thank You For Coming Frittata”

  • 12 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 pepper
  • 1lb bacon
  • 1/2 cup cooked asparagus
  • 1/2 cup cooked mushrooms
  • 2 potatoes, baked and cubed

1. Cut up the potato and the asparagus and evenly layer in a glass 9 by 13 inch glass baking dish.  Cut the bacon into small pieces and begin to brown.  In a separate pan fry mushrooms until there is little liquid left.

2. Crack eggs into a medium sized bowl, being careful to avoid shell and any blood spots (totally disgusting but I ran into an awful one)

3.  Mix in your milk and whisk until well blended.

4.  Once bacon is browned, pat down the bacon to get rid of any extra grease.  Spread the bacon and cooked mushrooms over the potato mixture.

5. Mix in 3/4 of the cheese making sure to spread around evenly with the other ingredients.

6. Pour egg and milk mixture over the frittata ingredients in the baking dish. Shake the pan gently from side to side to get even egg distribution.

7.  Add remaining cheese to top of frittata, and bake for 25-35 minutes.  The frittata should be set up and have the consistency of a scrambled egg.

8. Take the frittata out of the oven and allow to firm up and cool on the counter for about 5 minutes.  Get ready to dig into this bad boy, It is sure to please.
